Should stimulus money go to training day laborers?
Kize asked:
How do you feel about daylaborers getting stimulus money for training in this economy?
Facts are that over 80% of day laborers are illegal aliens, which the story refers to as immigrants.
Don’t you believe this money should be spent on getting American citizens who have lost their jobs employment?
Do you feel this is an outrage?

$1.2M grant brings day laborers indoors for job training

They wait on the city’s streetcorners, often shivering in the cold, hoping someone will drive by and offer them a job. Soon, they will be able to come indoors.
Beginning next month, day laborers will be eligible for job training and social service programs in three Queens neighborhoods under a new $1.2 million initiative paid for with federal stimulus dollars.
But advocates say they won’t be satisfied with anything less than full-fledged immigration centers.
“The city is doing a great job trying to create these kinds of services for our community,” said Ligia Guallpa of the Latin American Workers Project, a Jackson Heights-based nonprofit. But, she added, “the city needs to consider creating real, sustainable job centers.”
The new services will be available for low-wage immigrants in Jackson Heights, Woodside and Flushing starting on Jan. 4. The city Department of Youth and Community Development also will launch two similar programs in Brooklyn and one on Staten Island.
But Guallpa said she would rather see the city invest in permanent job centers that can educate and train workers and advocate on behalf of them. She is worried about what will happen to the initiative when the stimulus money runs out in September.
Day laborers routinely contend with intimidation from local residents, merchants and police, she said. And with the poor economy, there’s less work for the immigrants, who often get stiffed on their pay, she added. Her group runs a day-laborer center in Brooklyn that organizes workers and provides job and English-language training.
“We need job centers that…understand the real issues that day laborers are facing in New York City,” said Guallpa, whose group applied to run one of the Brooklyn programs.
Each group participating in the initiative will be required to work with about 80 immigrants, said Youth and Community Development spokesman Ryan Dodge.
Edwin Meléndez, a member of the city’s Temporary Commission on Day Laborer Job Centers, believes job centers can be good for the community too. “You mitigate the conflict between workers and merchants and neighbors who may object to [the day laborers] standing on corners,” he said.
Councilman-elect Daniel Dromm (D-Jackson Heights) said he plans to advocate for permanent centers during his term.
“We need to address the problems that day laborers face holistically, rather than piecemeal,” Dromm said.

No, the politicians aren’t interested in helping the poor.
They want to keep fatcat bankers raking in the billions, and other political cronies.
It appears that the wealthy politicians are more interested in making the rich even richer.
Clearly it would be money better spent to train American citizens, but if an amnesty is coming we’d be better off if these guys knew how to do something more than harass women, drink beer and urinate in public (which describes the parking lot of every Home Depot in Southern California).
And I’m going to take a wild guess by saying that you assume they are probably all illegal to because you did post this in the immigrations section.
I think it’s wonderful! More training means better workers. They do the jobs you wouldn’t think of even doing, so why are you angry?
Train them to do what? lift boxes? pick fruit? wash floors?
It’s a lot better then giving it to those lazy citizens that stand on the corner begging for money. At least the day laborers do any job at any pay.
Anything that helps out US Business owners, who then in return save us money by dropping their prices because of the day laborers hard work. I love it!
Only if they can prove their legal right to work here.
Do you have those “Facts” that show that 80% of day laborers are illegals?
I’m all for any kind of training for people that contribute to the US.
Well lets see if we had a perfect world were you didn’t let them cross the border an you didn’t allow anyone to work without Visas an proper papers then NO money should be spent on day Laborers. But the truth is you already allowed them in your country it would be evil to let them die an starve while their here. So yeah give them stimulas money but make this the Last time Give these people a place, give them papers, an stop them from sending thousands of dollars home untaxed. Basically we are going to have to give them citizenship but after that close the door on immigration to America from those countries.
when will the insanity stop?
its a grant… im completely fine with it. They didnt get a tax refund stimulus check since they can only pay into taxes with a false SSN, assuming they are illegal here, not all day laborers are.
It seems there`s no limit to stupidity of these idiots pro-illegal politicians & activists.this is REALLY IDIOTIC spending millions of $$ on ILLEGALS who are stealing jobs from low skilled and skilled citizens, instead of investing that money in creating jobs for Americans…This just shows you what kind of brain deads we elect to represent us, and that this country is damaged beyond repair by them….Only break these illegals deserve is rounding up and kicking the out of U.S. -together with these moronic politicians….The claim by jerk Dromm that these “day laborers face hostility..” is B.S. wait until citizens really get fed up with this crap, then you will really see “hostility” towards illegal criminals-there will be dead illegals on corners where they pander for and steal American`s job…It`s Dromm & illegals have not seen bad yet-but it`s COMING.
for the sake of keeping “blue collar” Americans from feeling any less competitive for the jobs they want; no, stimulus money should be used to train or give employment to any illegal immigrant. furthermore, no job should be given to an illegal immigrant. everything the government does should be in the best interest of its people. people who are here illegally know what to expect. yes, they do accept less pay for a job then a legal person and yes they accept treatment that no legal worker has to worry about. what my point in saying all of these “anti immigrant” this is to show you how the real enemy in the current American economic struggle is not the illegal day labor or field worker looking to make an HONEST day’s pay for an HONEST day’s work, it’s the American employers who hire them. I don’t deny nor condone the fact that these people broke the law by coming here. but they didn’t steal anything in working, only accepted the conditions offered to them by the people who pay them. employers know who they are hiring. illegal workers are more susceptible, desperate, and, above all, more cost effective.
This is the whole point illegal workers are more susceptible, desperate, and, above all, more cost effective and willing to under cut wages, this more cost effective comes at a price. Why should anybody be allowed to use fake or stolen documents to obtain work ? These very same more cost effective and willing illegals are willing to lie about the number of dependents they actually have, which allows them to have very low taxes withheld, this falls under being desperate enough to lie about personal information given. As long as the activists have this attitude that illegals will come before Americans. When illegals live 10-15 to a house this also reduces their expenses, this also is not the standard of living any American wants, this is to share their home with 10-15 other people. With over 15 million Americans out of work, this shows Obama is not serious about any crack down on employers, does not care where the taxpayers money is going and the activists are not being truthful when they say go after the employer.
