I am volunteering in Thailand. Which project should I pick? and why?

ANDY777 asked:

option 1. Preserving the culture of the hill tribes (The Akhas) in Northern Thailand (Chieng Rai region )
The main objective of the project is cultural exchange between the volunteers and the local villagers but the participants of the project will also practically work in the communities doing several kinds of support and development works, like renovation of some community spaces or field works and farming with the villagers.

option 2. English teaching program at the Royal Thai Air Force
Volunteers will be teaching English inside the Air Force base, about 5 kilometres from Khlong Hoi Khong. The students will be mainly soldiers and officers working inside the base.
Study theme: The volunteers will be introduced to the non-formal education techniques. The city of Hat Yai can be reached by public transport in about half an hour and the coastal Songkla city and its Samila beach can be reached in about an hour and a half.

Irrespective of which one you choose make sure you have a Thai work permit, as its is illegal to work, whether paid or unpaid if you dont have a W/P

Both options you describe would be classed as working under Thai law…

It’s nice of you to want to volunteer, but, I seen some of the programs people have asked about here on YA Thailand. Most of them charge you far more then it would cost a tourist who comes here for a holiday. You don’t mention anything about any cost, but beware. These companies make big profits which this program.

i would choose option 1 definitely, the community will take u under their wing like one of their own. i did something similar in a village in Kenya, building wells, play area’s for children, extending schools, the list goes on forever. it was one of the best experience’s of my life, i learned so much and have so many memories… no doubt it will be tough at times, but that’s what its all about, it makes it more of a challenge and the overall experience more worthwhile. after all life’s not easy, nothing ever is, it what keeps things interesting. do it you will not regret it, take it from someone who has been and done something similar, and made a difference :)

I would definitely pick option 1. But it very much depends on what you want more, what you feel more ready for.

Anywya, good luck and enjoy the country!

ha ha I’m the first to disagree. Because of lack of language, which i am assuming you have, option 1 will be frustrating and you won’t accomplish much. Teaching English, however is a better choice and what is so needed.

And besides the beach in Songkhla is awesome…
