Best way to deal with convicted offenders? Probation? House arrest? Jail? Community service? Execution?

John Hightower asked:

Some people feel that sending someone to prison only puts them around hardened criminals where they learn to be really bad.

Prisons are not the best living conditions. Inmates are frequently sexually abused by other inmates.

Many inmates have mental conditions. Many inmates were sexually abused as children.

Does it make sense to spend all that money, and risk having someone escape, by giving them a life sentence? Or is it better for society to execute the inmate and spend the money that it would have taken to house & feed them, to pay for social services to prevent the development of additional criminals?

Some argue that for 1st time offenders, its better to take the money spent on putting them in prison - and instead put them to work on community projects where they can learn job skills and self-pride.

The US has the highest rate of putting its citizens in prison than any other country. Who wants to raise taxes to pay for more prisons & more guards?

prison are not the best living conditions but if you put them under house arrest and then when they served their time they will deffinatly do it again…. prison can be harsh but i rather see them in prison serving their time instead of under house arrest… ive met some people who were in prison and they have totally changed their lives one of them is going to schools telling students how horrible its in there and how he was in there because of selling and doing drugs…

i think we should punish some people the way they do in other countries… it was either china or japan where if you are caught tagging a wall you get 10 lashes with a bamboo cane… there was an american do tagged a wall and was sentanced to that but it was later reduced to 5 lashed because americans got upset over the whole thing

I feel that career criminals that are repeat offenders over and over that have proven cant function in society should be executed instead of being a burden on the working society,no life in prison or continuous sentencing from time to time, straight to the chair or to get the injection, that wont happen, so option 2 is to take these same criminals and put them on the front line of foot infantry of any and every war and bring our honest men and women home and let the trash do our dirty work that way if they get killed OH WELL, saves us money on both accounts, i should run for president!! would ya vote for me??

it depends on the crime , i think if its a minor crime that community service might work but something major depends on what they did as to what kind of punishment is needed

If we followed your suggestion of execution, we would be a barbaric country. This is what Hitler did and Saddam Hussein.
I am for the death penalty for killers of children, but to execute a criminal because we don’t want to pay the taxes for his confinement is barbaric.

If prison were that bad, do you think people would be committing the amount of crime they are? I think that if you dreaded going to prison like you used to dread going to the principle’s office in school, there would be a lot less crime, especially for juveniles. Public lynchings, hard labor in prison, these are deterrents. A padded cell with a TV and a Nintendo are not.

I went to prison and was never sexually assaulted and found most of the people were just like the people on the outside only they were caught.I do believe in second chances and that Jesus is the only answer to our problems.I know you hated to hear that

This is a touchy subject. I believe that when the states shut down alot of the state mental hospitals crime rates skyrocketed. These people have no place to go…you cant exactly walk in an emergency room and say “I hear voices” they send you away…only to find you don’t have enough money to pay for a psychiatrist or the anti-psychotic meds for that matter.
HOWEVER….these people are not in prison for singing too loudly in church…these are murderers, rapists…violent people…im sorry, but in that case, i dont mind my tax dollars going to the prisons. My fiance is a corrections officer, and he doesnt say much about work…but from what he does say, im GLAD there are prisons. And if you do your research, its actually cheaper to keep a prisoner for life than to execute them…to execute them costs millions of dollars…where as feeding them 3 times a day is only a few dollars. Not to mention…in a recent study, inmates are outliving non incarcerated people by many years. they can’t be having it too bad.

I agree with the above statement…but if they commited very violent crimes…where without a resonable doubt it was them, they need to be executed. Like sadaam…within 30 days…some of them are sitting on death row for years..its like a joke to them. Especially here in PA…we have only executed 3 people since 1976…I’m sorry, but thats a joke…they need to start following in Texas’ footsteps…give some of these people what they deserve.

It largely depends on the crime as to how they do the time.
